Sustainable development goals

Understand how the environmental SDGs are measured,
the progress being made and the current gaps that exist

MOOC - Environmental SDG indicatorsIn September 2015, the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit adopted an international framework to guide development efforts, entitled ‘Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development’. The SDG framework has a total of 17 goals, 169 targets and 247 indicators— 92 of which are environment related. The SDGs aim to measure the most pressing issues facing the planet, including the interactions between topics. In terms of the environmental dimension of development, the SDGs cover natural resource management, climate change, water-related issues, marine issues, biodiversity and ecosystems, circular economy, environmentally sound management of chemicals and waste, and many other topics. UNEP is the Custodian for 25 of these SDG indicators – across SDG Goals:   6, 8,  12,  14,  15 and  17. For these, UNEP has the specific mandate to develop their methodologies, training materials for countries and SDG data reporting mechanisms.

UN’s Environmental Events Calendar

Calendar of EventsUNEP thrives to build coordination in the environment field among UN organizations and stakeholders. The SDG and Environment Statistics Unit has the pleasure to present to you this collaborative tool. The objective of this tool is to share events that are happening, or will happen around us in regard to environmental capacity building, or specific environmental events. An additional objective is to ensure information sharing to promote, enhanced collaboration and avoid duplication of events. UNEP’s Calendar of Events

Measuring Progress

Progress toward the achievement of the environmental dimension of the SDGs is the first step in helping governments and other stakeholders assess where related actions and governance arrangements are working. The United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) Measuring Progress reports aim to improve the understanding of where interlinkages exist between the indicators of the SDG framework, as well as of the types: reinforcing or competing, and strengths of these interlinkages, based on available data. They also provide information on the progress made to achieve the 92 environment-related SDG indicators and identify data gaps and opportunities to close those gaps.

This report builds upon insights and lessons learned from the Measuring Progress: Towards Achieving the Environmental Dimension of the SDGs,  the first publication of the series.

National Scorecard

The National Scorecard is a tool developed by UNEP to showcase the progress of countries in realizing the 92 environment-related SDG indicators. Users can select any country and navigate by goal or indicator levels. Data is presented by table and charts to facilitate the visualization of the progress made. The Scorecards are automatically updated once new data is published. National Scorecards assists UN Country Teams and national stakeholders in their Common Country Analysis (CCA) and the SDG Voluntary National Reviews (VNR).

Regional and Global Scorecard

The Regional and Global Scorecard is a tool developed by UNEP to showcase the progress made at regional and global levels in realizing the 92 environment-related SDG indicators. Users can select any region and navigate by goal or indicator levels. Data is presented by table and charts to facilitate visualization of the progress made. The Scorecards are automatically updated once new data is published. For more information on the calculation of the Average Annual Growth Rate (AAGR), please refer to the following methodology.

Projects

UNEP’s work is made possible by partners who fund and champion our mission. The Environment Fund is our core source of flexible funds, in addition to earmarked funds that enable us to expand and replicate our Programme in more countries and with more partners. UNEP works in partnerships with governments, the scientific community, the private sector, civil society and other United Nations entities and international organizations. Publications

The United Nations Environment Programme offers a wide variety of reports. The Environment and SDG unit spearheads the UN-wide monitoring and reporting on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. The unit publishes methodological documents, in-depth guidelines and progress reports on waste, gender and the environment, material flow accounts and many SDG indicators.

Online Trainings and Tools

UNEP’s Environment and SDG unit spearheads the UN-wide monitoring and reporting on the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. Online trainings and tools are developed to assist member countries and users in accessing self-paced training courses on the environmental dimension of the SDGs and policy tools that assist in better understanding the data.

The Environmental SDG Indicators Online Course is a self-paced course with individual 10 modules developed by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (UNSIAP), and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). This course provides an overview of the importance of monitoring the environmental dimension of development, the linkage with existing statistical frameworks (FDES and SEEA), and how to use environment statistics in decision making. The modules will also provide a brief overview on all 25 SDG indicators under UNEP custodianship. This e-learning course is also available in Russian

The Hot Spot Analysis Tool for Sustainable Consumption and Production provides three modules to analyse hotspot areas of sustainable consumption and production. In addition, the new standard reports provide more comprehensive information tailored to your needs regarding selected countries, specific sectors, or climate change impact hotspots.

The SDG 12 HUB is a one-stop-shop for governments, businesses, civil society and the public for tracking progress on the achievement of Goal 12 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development: ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.

The SDG Global Database gives you access to data on more than 210 SDG indicators for countries across the globe by indicator, country, region or time period.

About

The Sustainable Development Goals Policy Briefs highlight a hotspot of environmental change. The evidence provided builds on the scientific data and information hosted on Environment Live and is complemented by stories from the regions.
A significant lack of data has corresponded to a lack of investment toward achieving the environmental dimension of the SDGs. Currently, 68% of the environment-related SDGs do not have sufficient data at the global level to assess progress. If current trends continue, the world is on track to meet only 17% of the environment-related SDGs.
UNEP has identified 92 environment related SDG Indicators. Of these 92, UNEP is the custodian agency for 25 SDG Indicators
Of the 92 environment-related SDGs indicators, 38% are Tier I (A methodology exists and data is available for more than half of countries), 37% Tier II (A methodology exists, but data are available for less than half of countries) and 25% Tier III (No methodology exists).
