Brief Description

This workshop which focused on chemicals and waste statistics, held on the 14th to 15th November 2018 included representatives from UN Environment, Ministry of Protection of Nature and Sustainable development (MINEPDED), Centre for Information on the Environment (CIDE) of Yaoundé and the representatives of sectoral administrations.

The objective of this workshop was to share experiences and reinforce the capacity of participants on the statistics linked to waste management and chemicals in Cameroon. This involved a preliminary assessment of the state of chemicals and waste in Cameroon, identifying existing data streams and gaps, constraints, country needs and priorities. The workshops contributions are expected to lead towards initiating the production of a National Chemicals and Waste Data Report for Cameroon.

Key observations from this workshop included:
  1. Cameroon has been systematically collecting data on municipal, hazardous and recyclable waste since 2013.
  2. Municipal waste collection is serviced by French company HYSACAM, whose records are a key data source.
  3. Waste composition analyses have been done in Yaoundé and Douala but not in secondary cities. These include the separation of organic fraction of waste but does not separate food waste from inedible parts.
  4. Important gaps remain in wastewater treatment and chemicals stocks management.
