Brief Description

On the 25th and 26th of March 2019, UN Environment convened an Expert Consultation on Marine Litter National Source Inventories at its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, in order to launch the development of national source inventories for marine litter. The purpose of the workshop was to prepare a suggested structure and modality for developing national source inventories, which are expected to be based primarily on geospatial information of the land-based sources of plastic pollution, how plastics flow through particular rivers and the prevalence of plastics on beaches and within the EEZ. The national source inventories will include the GESAMP monitoring methodologies, a methodology for assessing inputs from land and freshwater and other data sources and be linked to SDG 14.1. Ultimately the national source inventories are designed to inform national and regional action plans to combat marine litter and microplastics by providing better data on the sources of plastic pollution entering the marine environment.
