Preventing the Next Pandemic
In response to the COVID-19 crisis, UNEP published in July 2020 a scientific assessment report called ‘Preventing the next pandemic – Zoonotic diseases and how to break the chain of transmission’. The report assesses the root causes of the emergence and spread of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and other ‘zoonoses’—diseases that are transmitted between animals and humans. The report also offers a set of key messages and practical recommendations that can help policy-makers prevent future pandemics and respond effectively to other novel disease outbreaks. This report was co-published with ILRI and appeared as a special volume of the UNEP Frontiers report series.
